A couple of years ago, when the Florida basketball team held a celebration for the school's first national title in hoops, the team played a joke on fans by faking that the Waterford crystal ball was accidentally dropped and shattered.

It was actually a fake.
Florida's football team suffered a similar accident with its BCS championship trophy from the 2006 national title. Only this mistake was real. UF officials confirmed the $8,000 trophy was knocked off its pedestal and destroyed last week.
It may remain a mystery who actually destroyed the crystal football, which shattered after hitting the ground outside of
Urban Meyer's office. UF already has contacted the company in Kentucky that makes the trophy for a replacement.
Florida associate athletic director Chip Howard confirmed the accident. The trophy was sitting on a coffee table outside of Meyer's office -- which has been moved to the sixth floor at Florida Field while construction of the new coaches' offices is being completed.
UF had promised fans a chance to have photos taken with the BCS trophy last Saturday at the Orange and Blue game, so a second trophy was used for that event -- which usually sits in a display case.
Howard said the school had insurance for the shattered trophy and it will be replaced within 90 days.
"That's why," he said, "we have two."
